I’ve been observing some different styles over the internet lately, and I’ve noticed that I’m feeling the rust and dusty theme lately. I know, it sounds kind of old, but I can’t help but be drawn to styles that are inspired from the past. The first style I’m particularly interested in is Steampunk. Think of visual images of Victorian technology built into a style. It’s a fashion scene that is just starting to be recognized.
Steampunk
Archetypes from movies: Steamboy, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, Canon Fodder, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, Howl’s Moving Castle, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Sherlock Holmes, Atlantis The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet, even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has some elements, particularly on Willy Wonka himself. If you want you can even add in Sweeny Todd if it suits your fancy.
Steampunk fashion seems to combine a Victorian Era look with a gothic and punk flourish. Really, it’s a clutter of rusty fashion. Think of a steam train, or boiler room, or rusted metal, and put it into fashion, and you’ve got steampunk. It is said to combine science fiction with fantasy. The style gives off that element. It’s quite a cutting edge fashion and completely taking a fashion risk. But for some reason I love it. Think of white blouses, waistcoats, trench coats, corsets, military-inspired clothing, aviator goggles, top hats, canes, gun belts, swords, and many other Victorian items, and combine them together. I am particularly fond of the gun belts, top hats, aviator goggles, and long coats. It’s a fascinating theme indeed. I fell in love with this style a while back on an American Girl website. That was the first time I heard of it. It’s just now becoming a big fashion style.
And for the gentlemen!
If anyone is interested in Steampunk fashion, it’s best to shop at Clockwork Couture for a start.
This fashion is recommended if you can’t find that perfect costume for Halloween. Or if you just want a unique look for this fall, give it a try. Recommend it to friends who are willing to take a dare in the fashion world. Check out movies to get some ideas on the look. Wear it to a party. Use it as a party theme. You can even decorate your home in the style. It’s up to you how you want to use it, but I think it’s cool it can be used in such a broad way. There are even some musical artists that also encourage the look, like Docter Steel. Give it a Try! I even recommended this idea to the Bratz. That doll line needs some edge again.
Another style Steampunk is said to be related to, but it’s not really the same, is CyberPunk, which I might do next. Cyber Punk reminds me of the “scene” look everybody’s doing now.
